Open Source Web Application Framework

Product Website: http://www.djangoproject.com/

Django is an open source web application framework, written in Python, which follows the model-view-controller architectural pattern. It was originally developed to manage several news-oriented sites for The World Company of Lawrence, Kansas, and was released publicly under a BSD license in July 2005. In June 2008 it was announced that a newly formed Django Software Foundation will take care of Django in the future.
Django's primary goal is to ease the creation of complex, database-driven websites. Django emphasizes reusability and "pluggability" of components, rapid development, and the principle of DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself). Python is used throughout, even for configuration and defining of and data models and template tags.
Django also provides an optional administrative CRUD (create, read, update and delete) interface that is generated dynamically through introspection and configured via admin models.
Django is ideally used where a highly customized development effort is required. It does offer some CMS functionality to be used stand-alone or integrated into an existing Django website, via projects like Django CMS and FeinCMS, for example. There is also a capable shopping framework project under development with the Satchmo Project.
The motto of Django is "The Framework for Professionals with Deadlines", and our experience with it confirms that motto.

Google App Engine - Web Application Framework

Product Website: http://code.google.com/appengine/

Google App Engine is a platform for developing and hosting web applications in Google-managed data centers. It was first released as a beta version in April 2008. Google App Engine is cloud computing technology. It virtualizes applications across multiple servers and data centers. Other "cloud"-based platforms include offerings such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure Services Platform. App Engine differs from services like Amazon Web Services, though, in that AWS is Infrastructure as a Service while App Engine is Platform as a Service. Google App Engine is free up to a certain level of used resources. Fees are charged for additional storage, bandwidth, or CPU cycles required by the application.
